Ohio University Teaching 2000-2002. Selections from 3D Design, Foundations Concepts, and Drawing 1.
These works are part of a collaborative project in 3D Studies where students were asked to create shelters. Students used a mixture of repurposed items and rudimentary art materials such as cardboard, felt, and paper mache.
“Martin Puryear and Jessica Stockholder should be kept in mind as manifesting two distinctly different ideas of shelter. Puryear constructs enclosures that seal the body off from the outside world, but allow freedom through their mobility. Stockholder creates an interface between inside/outside by amalgamating cultural objects that we associate with both interior and exterior space.
The first part of your strategy is to choose a site that corresponds with your idea or is a trajectory for your idea. Second, make your sculpture structurally sound. Third, consider the relationship between your shelter and the overall community of shelters, i.e. the parts of the whole. Finally, consider some to the meanings behind the ways humans have shaped their living spaces, beyond the physical necessities of structure and design.”
The Communities project was given to my Foundations Concepts students.
"Write a proposal for the creation of your own community. Explain in detail the ways the community functions by including system of government, type of family unit, geographical location, acquisition of food, housing, exchange of goods, economy and money exchange, philosophy and values, and transportation. Look at the systems in place in other societies, past, present, and imaginary. Think of the possibilities of each category mentioned above. Insert your personal interests into the mix. Include a 3-5 page proposal, plus an architectural model or two proposal drawings that map out all aspects of your society.”
We looked at the Shakers, Atelier Van Lieshout, Andrea Zittel, communes, cults, teams and world governments as inspiration for this assignment.
In the Ugly project, I asked students to draw on qualities they considered ugly and employ this aesthetic of the ugly in a finished object or image. The Ugly project was given to my Foundations Concepts class.
